Homestay/Host Family

• Low cost

• There is a curfew, so you cannot go out freely late at night.

• Meals provided

• High amount of support; get treated as a member of the family, so you must follow rules too.

• Single rooms

• Recommended for those who want to practice their Japanese, enjoy home-cooked Japanese food and learn the culture first-hand.

• Placement fee (paid once to the school) 10,000 JPY

• Fee per night, including meals: 3,300 JPY

• (Meals included: Breakfast & dinner on weekdays and 3 meals on weekends and national holidays).

• The commute time to school is usually longer compared to staying in a sharehouse.
  (Common commuting time; Sharehouse: within 40 minutes, Homestay: 40-60 minutes *Host family is not choosable. During summer, commute time can be longer up to 90 minutes.)

• The move-in day is limited to Saturday, and the move-in time must be adjusted to ensure it is neither too early nor too late.
  (Flight tickets should be booked to arrive between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.)

Shared Room

or Guest House (single room)

• Low cost

• High amount of freedom; noise levels are generally loud

• Meals not provided; kitchen usually available

• Make friends with people in your share house

• Recommended for those who want to make friends and learn about different cultures.

• Placement fee (paid once to the school) 5,000 JPY

• Bedding fee (first month only) 10,000 JPY

• Monthly rate:
  From 55,000 to 65,000yen per month/ shared room
  75,000 to 85,000 yen per month/single room

• Since most properties are monthly rentals, even for stays of 2 or 3 weeks, you will need to pay for one month's rent.

• Depending on the place, there may be limited opportunities to speak Japanese.

Private Apartment

• Higher cost

• High amount of freedom and privacy

• Meals not provided; kitchen usually available

• Initial cost; placement fee + deposit(refundable, minus a cleaning fee): 15,000 JPY

• Monthly rate: From 120,000yen to 150,00yen per month
